My name is Alexandra, and I work as a full-time photographer in California. As a visual artist, I started noticing more and more that if my work fit a specific niche [i.e. weddings or fashion], it could usually find a home in the world of print and magazine publications, but most passion projects [the things I was MOST excited about creating, but that didn't have a clear client or target audience] could not, and were doomed to just live on my hard drive.
As more time passed, it became clear that if I wanted a change, I needed to go ahead and make it, instead of just thinking about it. In January of 2015, COYOTE + OAK was launched, and in March of the same year, Vol. I was printed, and out in the world. This is not a publication with an office, or even a conventional 'staff'. Each issue is a collaboration of local California photographers, writers, and designers who are dedicating their time and talent to the storytelling of their creative community. With a rotating roundup of contributors, the only constant players are myself, along with my boyfriend and creative partner-in-crime, Chris. While a future of larger distribution would certainly be nice, right now we're happy to have this magazine be a passion project all its own that is running on enthusiasm and excitement. In a nutshell, everyone who plays a part in making this magazine happen is doing it for free, no matter how big or small their role.
